The Murderbot Diaries

I started reading the Murderbot Diaries because Martha Wells is going to be the Guest of Honor at WisCon next year and I wanted to do my homework ahead of time. One of my friends had been recommending it to me for a while, so this summer was a good time to start.

I immediately fell in love. I love how Murderbot interacts with humans, how it interfaces with technology, how it approaches the world. I love that it can hack anything and how it goes toe-to-toe with big bad guys. I actually like how the fight scenes are short - Murderbot charges in and blasts it, and I don't realize until a page later it has a projectile sticking out of it.

I would love to read any story where Murderbot has a challenge to face and needs to plan intelligently to overcome it. I would love to read any story where Murderbot gets mildly annoyed interacting with humans, or surprises them (because they think it's just a SecUnit). I really enjoy reading about Murderbot trying to parse emotion, and I really enjoy reading about how Murderbot actually (and sometimes begrudgingly) cares for the humans it's protecting.

I honestly could not remember any of the humans' names except for Mensah, so I don't care too strongly about what supporting characters show up.

I've read books 1-4 and will finish books 5 and 6 by Christmas.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Strange New Worlds was a delightful new take on Star Trek. I really loved Discovery - Discovery felt like a long novel / drama, and Strange New Worlds felt more like "workplace comedy". It leans towards episodic - which is great for fan fic! - but still felt like it was following an overall story. It was a nice change of pace. It felt far too short and I would love to see more hijinx / more of the characters interacting with each other. I can't wait for season 2!

I desperately wanted Oretgas and Nurse Chapel to be a couple 😍 If you are up for writing something cute and playful and romantic, I would love you forever. Doesn't need to be graphic or big - just something to make my little lesbian heart happy. I also really enjoyed their banter, so something where they have to work together / interact with each other would be a ton of fun to read. I really enjoyed how Chapel started going to Ortegas to talk about problems and would love to see them become closer friends.

I think the episodic nature of the show really lends itself well to writing fic. You could write a story about something they do in between missions that's relatively low consequence. You could write about some mission where they're integral to solving the problem. Perhaps the crew has shore leave, or they could go on an away mission together! Pretty much any setting would be good.

I would like for the Gorn to not make an appearance - they take the show more towards horror, which I don't enjoy.

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts

Kipo was a delight - she was energetic, eternally optimistic, and turns into a giant friggin' jaguar. I loved how she was able to bring everyone together by seeing what was unique in them and celebrating that. I really like how that contrasted with Wolf, who was tough as nails and hated everybody and everything. I know both kinds of people and it's enjoyable to see them interact.

It feels like each episode takes place somewhere new, but really it's all just in one city. I also selected worldbuilding because there's a whole wide world out there with so many other possibilities - I'm just so curious!

I would like to know what happens after the show ends - how has Wolf and Kipo's relationship changed? What is life like now? What happened to the rest of the world? Mutes and humans live in peace here - is that true everywhere else? Did any other humans survive? Are people trying to rebuild what they had, or are they trying to make something new? There's so many options - I would be happy with anything from a short Wolf / Kipo adventure in a new part of the world we haven't seen, to something broader where they figure out where the world is going next.

Short placeholder post so I can make the deadline! I'll fill this in more in a few weeks.

Thanks for bearing with me — I barely made the deadline this year because I was traveling, and I just got home. Thank you for your patience, Yuletide writer!! 🙏❤

DNWs: same as previous years. No rape / sexual assault / mind-control / violation of consent. No active depictions of self-harm. No abusive relationships (physical or otherwise).

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (TV)

I really enjoyed watching this show, it was SO CUTE. I had been hoping for a sequel, but they wrapped things up pretty nicely, so that seems unlikely.

I don't remember much of the original Mighty Ducks, just that there wasn't a whole lot of hockey in them. I am a hockey player (who started playing as an adult) so it was really fun to watch the how-do-I-even-play scenes. Reading about hockey is just as fun, so if you feel up to writing hockey scenes, I'd be very happy to read them!

I really liked Sofi. Her need to be perfect made her a really compelling / relatable character. I could see her attempting to do something at hockey, not being good at it, and the story revolving around her coming to terms with / solving that.

Nick was hilarious, and I loved the banter he added to the show (a friend and I shout "get bent!" at each other now 😂). I'd be happy having him as a secondary character in a story.

A Maya / Lauren ship would be soooo cute 😍 Their very different worlds would make a great backdrop for them trying to navigate a relationship.

You could also very easily write about these characters when they're in college! We can follow up with them when they're older, if you're interested in writing that. Maybe they meet up and join a college hockey team, or *gasp* play AGAINST each other.

Dune (2021)

I requested Duncan Idaho. I love how down-to-earth and capable he is, without needing to boast or brag, which is in contrast to basically every other character. He just gets shit done. Plus I love Jason Momoa and re-imagining Duncan as him is 😍😍😍

It felt like the movie didn't do Duncan justice — we see him talking to Paul, we see him explaining Stilgar spitting, and we see him fight off lots of bad guys 😕 More Duncan would have been nice, so I'll just settle for fanfic.

This being a request for the 2021 movie limits the scope of what you can write about  — so no exploring Duncan + Siona vs Leto, I guess. Duncan's time among the Fremen would be a good place to explore (I don't remember reading much about it in the books, either). Anything pre-movie is probably good, too, as a way to set the stage.

If you enjoy writing fight scenes, write a fight scene! I'm less interested in the specifics of the action and more interested in the maneuvering it takes to win.

I tend to be most interested in f/f ships, but I'll make an exception for Duncan if Fremen ladies are fawning over him 😂

Dune Series - Frank Herbert

I really enjoyed the political / social maneuvering in Dune. It's SO intricate and SO fun to read. I love surprises — when someone has something in their back pocket that they planned for ahead of time (but isn't revealed to the reader) and they pull it out at the right moment (it does have to be believable / plausible, though). Dune is a setting where that happens ALL THE TIME.

I requested Alia Atreides. I desperately wanted her to be my favorite character, but I felt like the books skipped to "she's the bad guy" pretty quickly, and there wasn't much time for her to grow on me. I don't actually mind her being evil, so if you want her to be evil, by all means. I would love to see her coming to power — it'd be nice to see her trying to forge her own identity. Alia doesn't need to "win", either — it's OK if she gets out-maneuvered.

I loved the idea of a child that's an adult, and it'd be great to see people underestimate her because she plays up her child-ness (nothing sexual though please). I hated how the Baron took control of her and do not want a story with him in it (it's one of my DNWs).

Luca (2021)

This movie was delightful! I liked the second half of it the most — less of the "explore Luca / Alberto's relationship" and more "how do they interact with the town".

I'm an endurance athlete and tried to do a triathlon this summer (the swim got cancelled so it ended up being a duathlon (I actually didn't know how to swim before this summer)), so watching a movie about a triathlon was really fun. If you feel like writing about the trio getting back together for another triathlon, I'd love reading about it!

I think it'd be fun having Giulia go visit Luca's family underwater — maybe even his relatives in the deep. There'd be logistical problems, but that would be fun to explore in a fic.

Luca / Giulia in school / college would be a ton of fun, too. I imagine there's all sorts of things Luca doesn't know or understand and he gets into a lot of trouble because of it, and Giulia comes to his rescue.

I'm not much on m/m ships, and the movie ships Luca / Alberto pretty hard (and even shows jealousy!). I'm not big on m/f either, and Luca / Giulia is pretty obvious. I do love f/f ships but there's nobody to pair Giulia up with so 🤷‍♀️ If you feel like inventing a girlfriend for her, by all means!

Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)

I love this movie so much.

I really like Raya. I love how unbendable she becomes because of past trauma — it makes her very believable and very relatable. The movie glosses over her dealing with the trauma / guilt of her being responsible for the breaking of the world (the way she narrates the opening is pretty glib), and watching her struggle with that and coming to terms with it would be challenging to read (emotionally), but very rewarding.

I would love to hear about Namaari. Does she have any guilt for her role in the breaking of the world? Does she feel bad for betraying Raya at all? How does she process everything?

I love Raya and Namaari's relationship — I wish they had been canonically gay (we were SO close), and would swoon to have a story of their relationship becoming romantic / official.

It also feels like there were some interactions between Raya / Namaari that got skipped - interactions after the breaking of the world, but before they meet again in the movie. Those would be fun to explore, too!

I would also be happy with plain worldbuilding here — where do dragons come from? Where do Druun come from? Are they gone for good? Do they come back later? How were they created in the first place? The movie gives some hints — Druun are born of human discord — but details would be fun
kriona: Randi's predominantly blue hair (Default)

Hi friends.  This is my second year writing for Yuletide.

DNWs: same as last year.  No rape / sexual assault / mind-control / violation of consent.  No active depictions of self-harm.  No abusive relationships (physical or  otherwise).

The Kingkiller Chronicles

I love the Kingkiller Chronicles.  It's one of my favorite book series, and I'm still excited about them years later. Cthaeh, the evil tree, is probably my favorite villain of all time.  I'm a linguist and I was so excited to learn about the Adem and their gestures of conveying emotion and tone (it kind of reminds me of emojis 🤷♀️).  I scoffed at his line of "I know 7 words to make a woman fall in love with you" until someone said 7 words to me and I swooned.

Kvothe is not my favorite character.  He's kind of an asshole, and the way he deifies women is problematic 😑 That said, I enjoy watching him be supremely good at things, and I enjoy watching his arrogance get him into trouble.  He's the only character I requested for this fic, and that's because he has so many unknowns — he's done a ton of stuff since he became Kote.  I think it'd be fun to explore an adventure he had, or something heroic he did, or a fantastical place he visited.  I'd like to hear more about his adventures.

Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke is my favorite anime, and my favorite Miyzaki movie.  A lot of others come close, but Mononoke is the only one where I am still excited to watch it 20 years later.  The music was hauntingly good, and the art was absolutely gorgeous (I bought the soundtrack as a kid and even owned this as a VHS 😂).  This is probably the film that started me on the path of becoming an environmentalist and an anti-capitalist.  Growing up, I wanted to BE San — friends with wolves, living in the forest, fighting bad guys.

So, I'm interested in hearing a story about San.  I want a story where I see her fierceness and strength on display.  That could take a lot of forms, and I'm not strongly attached to which, but here are some ideas.  It could be an origin story — a coming of age where she proves herself to Moro and is treated as an equal member of the wolf clan.  It could explore a pivotal moment between her and Eboshi — perhaps their first meeting — that frames the story for the movie.  You're welcome to explore the events after the movie if you have something in mind, it's wrapped up pretty nicely so I don't have any suggestions for what conflict could occur after (I'm not terribly interested in a romantic story between her and Ashitaka, though an AU where San is in love with a woman... 🤔😍).

Ocean's 8

I was delighted by this movie when it came out.  I was a huge fan of Ocean's 11, felt let down by Ocean's 12, and was veerrrrry cautious going into Ocean's 8.  It was a pretty run-of-the-mill heist movie, but then the twist!  Ahh!  I loved it!

I'm requesting this fandom because I want to read about kickass women doing kickass things.  Probably heist related, or at the very least heist-adjacent.  Want to explore a short side quest that took place during the movie?  Sign me up.  Want to take a couple characters and do a smaller heist?  LOVE IT.  Want to write your own elaborate heist with plot twists and near misses and daring escapes?  I hear you and support you but that might be a little long for Yuletide.

If you're excited to write about Ocean's 8, I'm excited to read about it.

kriona: Randi's predominantly blue hair (Default)
This is my first year signing up for Yuletide, and I'm feeling very overwhelmed!

I picked a bunch of fandoms because, honestly, I'm just excited to be participating, and I'm less concerned about getting something that exactly fits what I want. I want to be accommodating to my author (hi!) and this felt like a good way to do that.

Likes: I prefer gen stories, but if you want to write a love story I would prefer it to be queer. I've seen so many versions of hetero-normative love stories that I'm tired of them.

DNWs: no rape / sexual assault / mind-control / violation of consent. OK if characters struggle with the aftereffects (ie, PTSD), but it needs to be handled delicately or not at all. No active depictions of self-harm. No abusive relationships (physical or otherwise).

The Magicians - Lev Grossman

Characters: Julia Wicker

I've read the books and watched most of the TV series - the plot differences infuriate me, but I have a clearer vision of the characters from the TV show because it's more recent. I identify with Julia. She's incredibly intelligent, resourceful, and has had some truly awful shit happen to her. I'm pretty sure she's a Slytherin (just like me).

I don't have strong opinions for a story - ideally Julia would be the main character and it would happen before she becomes non-human, but beyond that, I don't have a solid vision. Maybe she's exploring some aspect of magic on her own, or she's brought her hedge witch crew along with. Or maybe we're even in an alternate timeline where she got into Brakebills, or she snuck in, or she founded her own school - really I just want a story where she's being capable.

Sexual assault and self-harm are triggers for me, so watching the show / reading the books was really difficult when these subjects came up. It helped me identify a lot stronger with Julia, but I don't want those things to happen again in this short story. It's OK if she has to struggle with effects of those events, because I struggle with those too, but be delicate please.

Nibelungenlied

OH MY GOSH I read this in college in Old High German. It was the hardest book I've ever had to read (because nobody speaks Old High German anymore), but it really stuck with me - I mean there's a character named Hagen, and Hagen is my last name. I love the legends surrounding Siegfried. I honestly don't remember the plot very clearly, so the story doesn't have to relate to the book at all. Anything mythical would be fine - maybe we explore Siegfried defeating Fafnir, or another monster, or perhaps there's some other epic adventure he went on. Maybe we get a story from Kriemhild's perspective and learn about her life before Siegfried gets involved. Maybe we're in an alternate Earth and the mythology is completely different. It all sounds exciting.

Dwarf Fortress

I am so very entertained by this idea. Even though the dwarves in Dwarf Fortress had names and histories and goals, they still felt like automatons. I like the idea of a dwarf suddenly becoming a character in a story, where you can get to know them and their feelings far more intimately than in an interface.

I think a story starting around a dwarf being taken by a strange mood would be interesting - a strange mood could take us all sorts of places. But it could just as easily be a story about what happens when the dwarves dig too deep and demons flood the base (it's happened to me). There's so little structure to build off of here, I'd be happy with anything!

Stardew Valley (Abigail)

Characters: Abigail

Abigail was by far my favorite character in Stardew Valley. Purple hair? Occult interests? 😍 I'm smitten!

So, any story involving Abigail would be exciting. Maybe she and her friends are playing D&D one night and something spooky happens. Maybe the Wizard decides to take her up as an apprentice and her occult interests turn into actual magic. Maybe she's emboldened by the new character moving into town that she decides to be more independent from her family and moves out on her own. Maybe she has a secret relationship with the fae that comes to light. Maybe she takes Sebastian's motorcycle and rides off to explore her dreams in the big city. It all sounds good!

Untitled Goose Game (Goose)

Characters: Goose

I am tickled by Untitled Goose Game and all the memes surrounding it. The goose appeals to the neutral evil side of me, which is deeply entertained when this goose runs around fucking with people at unexpected moments.

There's a lot of free reign to be had on this story, but if you've signed up to write for this fandom, it's likely you know the game and the memes surrounding it, so you can probably write something in the spirit of the goose. Some rough ideas that I think could turn into amazing stories:
  1. The goose ends up somewhere besides the village. Goose in an airport. Goose at the fairgrounds. Goose in a parade.
  2. The goose cross-over memes are hilarious. Maybe the goose shows up on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and honks at some evil demon. Maybe the goose steals the Infinity Gauntlet in the middle of a villainous monologue.
  3. The story actually follows someone else, but the goose shows up randomly to wreck havoc. Maybe it's a romance novel until the goose shows up and steals the champagne. Maybe a kid is being forced to attend a birthday party of his bully at school and is sad until the goose starts stealing presents.
Really, anything where the goose runs around causing mayhem would make for a great story.

Jessica Jones

Characters: Jessica Jones

I loved Jessica Jones. I like how she's dark and depressed and angry at the world. It feels very real and relatable. I love how she's cynical and looking out only for herself. She'd punch a guy for telling her to smile (and I've wanted to do that on several occasions).
I'm not interested in a story that involves Killgrave. I think the story easily becomes about him, and while I can relate to abusive and controlling partners, I'd rather not read about it some more.

"Reluctant good guy" would be interesting. Something bad is happening, Jessica has a legitimate and compelling reason to not get involved, but allows herself to get pulled in anyway. "Good guy turns bad" would also be really interesting - maybe she gets down a dark path (again, for plausible reasons), ends up involved in some shady things, and some good guy comes to fight her and ends up providing emotional support as she unloads on them. That could be really cathartic.

I'm only familiar with the show, and the crossover with Luke Cage. I think they had some seasons dealing with the aftermath of the Avenger movies... but if they did, I didn't watch any of it, so excuse this following naivety!

While the Avengers were doing large-scale save-the-city kind of stuff, seeing how Jessica helps out on a smaller scale could be humbling. Some aliens invade, Jessica punches a couple into orbit, then helps clean up the wreckage of her town.

If Jessica survived the Snap, following her through a dark depression and the events that force her to come out of it would be a heavy but powerful story.

In summary, I think something really dark and gloomy and depressing would work really well. It'd be relatable. I also think something where she overcomes some personal difficulty - alcoholism, depression, self-destructive behaviors - would be compelling, even if it's only a small victory. It's OK (and maybe even encouraged) if this story makes me cry!
